The City of Cape Girardeau created the Co-Responder Unit (CRU) to improve safety, reduce strain on emergency services, and connect residents to real solutions. The CRU is a team of city employees fully embedded within the Cape Girardeau Police Department: Dr. Shannon Farris, with a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and a specialization in crisis management; Rachel Alcantara, Social Worker; and Corporal Will Rogers.
The CRU’s mission is to connect people with the right help at the right time. Instead of unnecessary trips to the emergency room or jail, we respond on scene, listen, and link people with the best services for their needs. We follow up when appropriate to make sure support continues. We also identify gaps in the system and build programs when possible to better serve the community.
Co-Responders reach out to people who have had police contact during a behavioral health crisis, offering care, support, and resources. Since launching in February, the program has already made a meaningful difference for our department and our community.
