City Council

The City Council is the elected governing body for the City of Cape Girardeau and consists of the Mayor and six City Council Members. The Mayor is directly elected at-large (city-wide) for a four-year term and the City Council Members are elected from six wards for staggered four-year terms. Cape Girardeau is a "home rule" city with the Council-Manager form of government.

Meeting Participation

Everyone is welcome to contact their Council directly (find your representative in the menu) or by using our online form.

The public is welcome to speak to the Council during a public meeting about items on the agenda.  For items not appearing on the published agenda, the Mayor may invite the attending public who pre-register to speak. Registration must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. on the date of the Council meeting.  When recognized by the Mayor, the speaker will be given up to 3 minutes to speak, and the full time allotted for all appearances will be 15 minutes. Due to this 15 minute time constraint, not all registrants will be afforded the opportunity to speak.

Public appearances and presentations may not be met with an immediate response as Council considers the presented issue.
