Masks Required Inside City Facilities

Visitors to City facilities are required to wear a mask or face covering inside City-operated buildings.
  • City Hall
  • Parks & Recreation indoor & outdoor facilities
  • Cape Girardeau Regional Airport
  • Fire Department (closed to visitors as of July 7)
  • Police Department 
  • Public Works Department facilities (by appointment only as of July 13)
  • Municipal Court
We ask that all visitors to our facilities be kind to staff who are working to make our facilities a safer environment.

To continue serving the public and protecting our workforce, more departments might also close to walk-in visitors or otherwise modify operations. Some exceptions might apply. Check our website or call ahead for the latest information. 


About Masking at Parks & Recreation 

For more information on this policy, please contact any facility listed below, or call our Parks & Recreation Main Office at 573.339.6340. 

A.C. Brase Arena – Masks are required when conducting business at the Parks & Recreation Main Office, or when renting the facility for private functions. This also applies to the 4-H Exhibit Hall.

Cape Splash & Central Municipal Pool – Masks are required to enter the facility, but not required nor allowed in the water. Masks are required in concession lines or in the restroom unless you are able to social distance from other family units. Staff who are able to social distance such as lifeguards, will not need to wear a mask.

Jaycee Municipal Golf Course – Masks are required when conducting business in the Pro Shop. Masks are not required while out on the course if you are in a cart that has the plastic divider, and if you can social distance while out on the course.

Osage Centre, Shawnee Park Center & SportsPlex – Masks are required when conducting business at the front desk or office, while being a spectator, and when renting a facility for private functions. Masks are not required while playing sports or exercising in a fitness room or group fitness class. Please practice social distancing in fitness rooms and group fitness classes. Masks will not be required in any designated eating areas, but will be required while in concession lines & when ordering.

Shawnee & Arena Park Sports Complex (outdoor ballfields) – Masks will be required to enter the facility and if you are not able to social distance such as in the restroom or in line at the concession stand. Players/Coaches/Officials while engaged in the physical activity will not be required to wear a mask.

New Lorimier Cemetery Office. – Masks are required to conduct business. Masks are not required outside if you are able to social distance.

Parks and Recreation Programming – Staff will be required to wear a mask with the exception of those conducting physical activities and who are able to social distance.


Police Department Coronavirus Response

Officers will only be field-dispatched to life-threatening emergencies and crimes in progress. For non-emergency calls, the call will be handled over the telephone by an officer or the on-duty station commander.

The front lobby of Police Headquarters will be closed to members of the public.

Residents who desire to speak to an officer regarding non-emergencies or general inquiries should contact our non-emergency business number at 573-335-6621.

We continue a modified caller query screening process for Communicators to utilize while interacting with community members. The response to these answers will not exclude a caller from receiving services or from having an officer respond, they only allow the officer the opportunity to take necessary safety precautions.

The Cape Girardeau Municipal Jail inmate visitation is suspended with the exception of attorney-client visitations until further notice.

In addition, at the start of the business on Friday, July 10th, visitors to city-operated facilities are required to wear a mask or face covering with some exceptions at certain city facilities. Check the city’s website for specific details: http://cityofcape.org/covid19

It is the mission of the Cape Girardeau Police Department to continue to function at its same high standard of service. These modified protocols are in place to protect our officers so that they may continue to serve the community without interruption and they are also in place to protect the public and effectively diminish the spread of COVID-19 throughout the community.

We greatly appreciate your understanding and your cooperation. We want our community to know that we are actively evolving with this situation and we intend to remain unwavering in our dedication to serve and protect this community.




Watch for symptoms

People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness.

Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell

Children have similar symptoms to adults and generally have mild illness.

This list is not all inclusive. Other less common symptoms have been reported, including gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
