The City of Cape maintains more than 230 miles of street and 22 miles of alleyways, which is roughly the same distance as a drive to St Louis and back. Some roadway in Cape Girardeau is privately owned or maintained by other agencies (such as Kingshighway). Street maintenance efforts are coordinated by both our Public Works and Community Development departments using funding from the General Fund, Capital Improvement Sales Tax, other sources when available, but mostly the Transportation Trust Fund sales tax.

The following is a list of our projects that are in progress, coming soon, or recently complete.

In Progress

All construction schedules are subject to change due to weather, staffing, material availability, and other factors. Always be intensely cautious when driving near workers and construction zones.

🔶 S. Sprigg Street  – Shawnee to Southern Expressway
Construction began March 2025, with work expected to continue in 2026. Truck and other commuter traffic will be detoured via Kingshighway. Only local traffic will be permitted within the project boundaries for residents and businesses. Total closures will intermittently occur
with detours posted. The project includes new roadway, sidewalks, and replacing a 100-year-old water main. As of 10/30/25, all traffic is anticipated to close soon from Linden south including the intersection with Southern Expressway and Giboney.
