The American Council of Engineering Companies of Missouri (ACEC Missouri) held their annual awards banquet on Feb. 10. Horner & Shifrin and the City of Cape Girardeau were honored with an Engineering Excellence Award for the South Sprigg Street Bridge Project.

Accepting the award were Ramin Ashrafzadeh, Senior Project Manager with Horner & Shifrin; Casey Brunke, City Engineer, and Stan Polivick, Assistant Public Works Director, City of Cape Girardeau.

Casey and Stan worked closely with the Horner & Shifrin design team on the project. They also coordinated funding through the Federal Highway Administration and Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), and served as project administrator and project manager through completion of construction.

The project addressed the restoration of the bridge and roadway through an area with multiple, large, and active sinkholes. The sinkholes became extremely active in 2007, forcing closure of the road several times over the next six years. The road was closed indefinitely in 2013 until a more permanent solution could be completed. Construction was finished and the road opened to traffic in October 2017.
