Fire at 803 Independence St. - Oct. 31, 2018

At 12 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2018, the Cape Girardeau Fire Departmetn was dispatched for black smoke comng from a roof at 803 Independence St. The smoke was initially discovered by a police officer on patrol. Upon arrivla, black smoke and fire was coming from several windowsn on the second floor. A bystander reported that someone was inside a second-floor bedroom. The initial crew pulled a hose to the second floor to attack the fire, while another crew completed an aggressive search of the second floor under hot temperatures adn low visibility due to smoke. The searches throughout the home yielded no additional persons. The fire was under control in approximately 20 minutes, and several crews assisted in extinguishing smaller fires that had extended into the walls and ceiling areas. All fire personnel cleared the scene at 2:15 a.m. The cause of the fire remains undetermined after the investigation. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Significatn smoke and fire damage was contained to the second floor, while the first floor contained moderate water damage.
