Posted on 05/23/2018
At 8:12 a.m. on May 22, 2018, the Cape Girardeau Fire Department was called to 519 S. Pacific St. for smoke in the apartment. Upon arrival, we found fire in the front door and window area of Apartment 2. First units on scene made contact with the individuals outside of the structure, and they advised us that there were no occupants inside the 3 apartments.

The Fire Department responded 4 engines and 1 ladder truck to the scene. Mutual aid was called in and Scott City and 4 off duty personnel were called in to man the city.

The fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes with an aggressive attack with multiple hose lines. There was extensive overhaul to the structure to confirm that there was not any extension to the attic and 2 other apartments. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.

The apartment of origin was heavily fire and smoke damaged. The other 2 apartment were all smoke damaged. All occupants were displaced and the American red Cross was assisting the occupant in Apartment 1 to find housing. About an hour into the scene, the mutual aid departments were released and returned to their jurisdictions. An investigation was done at the scene and the cause of the fire was undetermined due to the inability to talk to the occupants of apartment 2.

There were no working smoke detectors in the apartment of origin.

About 2 hours after the initial call, all units were placed in service and the building was turned over to the owners and occupants.
