At 5:53 p.m. on May 1, 2019, all Cape Girardeau Fire Department units were called to respond to a call for smoke coming from the upstairs at 418 S. Benton St.

On arrival, moderate black smoke was showing from the second floor. The occupants were attempting to remove animals from the upstairs via a ladder. After the home's occupants were moved to safety, firefighters rescued and removed two dogs and four cats from the home. Three of the animals were given oxygen using a specialized pet oxygen mask due to smoke inhalation. The fire was contained within 10 minutes to an upstairs bedroom. No further fire extension into the attic area was reported.

One resident of the home was treated by firefighter paramedics and transported by private EMS after feeling ill while attempting to rescue the family pets.
