Apartment Fire - Jan. 30, 2018

First arriving unit on the scene notified the other units responding that there was light smoke from the exterior and fire visible from the front kitchen window. Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded 4 Engines and 1 Ladder truck along with the on duty Battalion Chief. The first arriving Engine pulled a pre-connected line from their apparatus and made a fast aggressive interior attack on the fire. The fire was extinguished in about 5 minutes and overhaul began in the apartment. The apartment sustained heavy smoke and moderate fire damage to it. The occupants in that apartment were out of the apartment upon our arrival. All other occupants from the other apartments were also out of their apartments upon our arrival. 2 other engine companies assisted with fire extinguishment and overhaul. The ladder company assisted in removing the smoke and checking the other apartments. Later in the scene the apartment below the fire apartment had water damage to it also due to water running down the walls. Those occupants from both apartments were given a place to stay due to the damages and the electrical hazards of the fire. In all 2 adults and 3 children were placed in temporary housing. The American Red Cross was notified along with the Landlord. The smoke detectors alerted the occupants and they exited the structure.
