NOVEMBER ELECTION - Water Proposal
Our water treatment plant needs significant upgrades and many water mains across the city need to be replaced. Voters will decide whether to approve a water bill increase to fund these critical infrastructure needs ($8-14/month for most). If this issue does not pass, our system will become increasingly less reliable over time, and we’ll need to consider water conservation. Shortages would be more likely, and a quality decline would be possible. Read more about the proposal and calculate your bill here.

Our administration is very busy preparing the FY25 budget for Council approval. Budget issues that are on the forefront of concern—like funding increases in public safety salaries, and repairing/replacing antiquated water treatment infrastructure—are being taken into account as we set the priorities of the coming fiscal year. This process will be before the public numerous times in June, which is important as our city budget lays out the priorities of the city. Floodwall Renovation Series Complete!
**DOWNTOWN behind the Merriwhether Pump Station at Merriwether and Water.** In 2008, the ownership, operation, and maintenance of the flood wall and levee system were transferred to the City of Cape Girardeau. Prior to 2008, the North Main Street and Main Street Levee Improvement Districts operated the system. Productive partnerships among the former Levee Districts, the City, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, local property owners and businesses, and the railroad have provided for the continuing success of the Cape Girardeau Flood Protection System. Following remarks today, we will take a commemorative photo with project partners, and you are welcome to walk the floodwall on a self-guided tour. We hope the community is proud of this successful collaboration that has helped us further reduce flood risks for Cape Girardeau.
