May 1 – Attended the Community Impact Luncheon hosted by Community Counseling.

Training

April 27–28 – CGPD hosted the Shield of Armor Wellness Conference. Sixteen CGPD officers attended, along with participants from across the country, including Missouri, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Illinois, and Arizona. This was the largest Shield of Armor conference to date, with a total of 193 participants. Approximately 45% of attendees traveled more than 50 miles to attend.

April 27–May 1 – Three CGPD officers attended an Emergency Vehicle Operators Instructor Course hosted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Jefferson City.

April 28 – Seven CGPD officers participated in in-house defensive tactics training.

April 29 – One CGPD officer attended a standardized field sobriety refresher course in Arnold.

Public Works

May 2- 7

• Streets crews continue to perform repairs on Julie Drive, fill potholes, trim trees, and conduct mowing operations.

• Stormwater crews have closed the downtown pump stations, opened the Themis floodwall gate, are addressing nuisance abatement requests, and mowing detention basins.

• The Water Department is continuing preparations to replace a 2-inch water line on Hazel Drive.

• Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) staff are conducting laboratory testing and working on IPS Pump 5.

Fire Department

May 2-7

• Zoellner Construction is continuing project on St. 2 Annex. Poured concrete for floor drains and generator pad.
• Monthly Captains meetings held.
• New Firefighting foam demo held on Wednesday.
• Lowe’s donated an AED to the department.
• Tornado siren test. Currently have a communication issue with the siren at the Jaycee Golf Course. Work order submitted.
• Hosted Career Day for Trinity Lutheran Students.
• Monthly Dive Training.
• 17 Fire Inspections completed.
• Totals incidents over last 14 days– 5 Fires (4 outside fires, 1 vehicle fire), 3 Hazardous Situations, 44 Medicals, 17 Public Service, 19 Rescue, 17 Non-Emergency, 1 Law Enforcement Support.

Parks

Programs and Community Events:

• Community Bingo will be held Friday, May 1, at the Osage Centre beginning at 6:30 p.m.
• Boys 7th and 8th Grade Baseball League begins May 11.
•  Girls Softball Leagues begin May 11.
•  Adult Sand Volleyball Leagues begin May 12.
•  Health and Wellness will host a Team Meal Prep Health Seminar on May 12 at the Osage Centre from 12:15–1:15 p.m.
•  Yoga in the Park will begin May 16 at the Capaha Park Band Shell, with class starting at 8:15 a.m.
•  Heritage Day will be held Saturday, May 16, at the Red House Interpretive Center from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will feature lace-making, blacksmithing, live music, and more.
• A ribbon cutting for the Youth Outdoor Sports Complex will take place Tuesday, May 19, at 4:30 p.m. at the Shawnee Park Sports Complex.
•  Cape Splash Family Aquatic Center opening day is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, at 11:00 a.m.
•  The Nashville Road Show will be held in Cape Girardeau on June 5, 2026, at Arena Park. The event will feature performances by emerging Nashville artists. Tickets are available at www.nashvilleroadshow.com

Impactful Projects:

• Phase 1 of the Youth Sports Complex project is complete and included construction of five baseball fields. Phase 2, which will include football fields on the north side of Shawnee Parkway, is currently underway.
• Work has begun on the Cape LaCroix Trail project. Apex Paving is widening and overlaying the trail from Bloomfield Road to Shawnee Park, with completion anticipated in fall 2026. During construction, the southern section of the trail will be closed.
•  The Cape County Rotary Club will clean, paint basketball goals, and restripe the court at Capaha Park on Saturday, May 9. We extend our appreciation to the Rotary Club for their continued investment in the community.

Airport

May 2- May 7

• Construction on the new corporate hangar is ongoing.
•  Wildlife mitigation for Birds and Coyotes on the airfield.
• Continuous Mowing, whenever weather permits.
•  Inaugural Flight to Pensacola (PNS) was on Wednesday May 6th. The ceremony featured multiple media agencies, Jackson and Cape Chambers, elected officials, and numerous members of the public. Mid-West towing displayed a large American Flag, and CGFD performed a water cannon salute as the aircraft taxied out. Speakers were the Airport Manager, Contour’s Vice President of Operations, Andrew Chevalier and Mayor Pro Tempore, Nate Thomas.
• Operations Continued painting the RWY Markings on RWY 2/20
• Operations Staff and especially Audrey did a great job setting up for the inaugural event.

What’s Going on in Cape

OPTIMIZE City Process Improvement Update 
Our initiative began last fall with insight from staff, observation of processes and documentation of workflows by our Systems Analyst, Lindi Prindle. The teams have improved ERP Utilization across departments, reduced manual processes and improved financial tracking. Departments are benefiting from informational internal “Hub Cards” that increase visibility of workflow status and functional needs. We have enhanced customer payment options, improved licensing processing and compliance, implemented inventory controls, customized forms for customer interaction and created an electronic form submission platform. Community Development, Public Works and the Finance departments are benefiting from improved processes that save time, reduce costs, and improve services.
Embracing our ERP system capabilities by implementing system features not previously optimized has allowed us to eliminate duplicate costs of other software purchased to solve independent departmental needs. We are excited to be developing a culture utilizing the Optimization of our ERP system to focus on adding value, eliminating steps and minimizing costs.
