Training

01/05 – 01/09 – Police Chief, Adam Glueck, attended the third week of Command College with the Missouri Police Chiefs Association. Classes focused on critical incident management and homeland security.

01/06 – CGPD hosted a free Mobile Data Terminal training session through the Missouri State Highway Patrol. There were 26 officers from CGPD and various other agencies in attendance.

Public Works

January 12-16

• Streets crew should complete a patch on Lynnwood Drive this week. They are also continuing leaf pickup.

• Stormwater crew is making necessary repairs to a stormwater swale at the Transfer Station.

• The 2-inch Water crew continues to tie in service lines to an upgraded water main on Franklin Avenue.

Parks

January 5-9

Upcoming Leagues and Events:

• Boys and Girls Youth Basketball League games continue. Games for the 8 week season will be played Friday January 16 at the Sportsplex and Saturday January 17 at various gyms in the community.  There are 140 teams in the league.
• The Sportsplex will host the NSSC MLK Extravaganza Volleyball Tournament Saturday January 17, Sunday January 18 and Monday January 20. There are 102 teams registered for the tournament. 
• The Osage Centre will host Community Bingo Friday January 15 beginning at 6:30 pm.
• The Cardinals Caravan will be held Monday January 19 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Osage Centre. This event features a meet and greet and autographs from various Cardinal Baseball players.  Tickets are still available for the event. 
• The Annual Celebration of Youth Sports Awards Banquet will be held Friday January 23 at the Osage Centre beginning at 5:30 pm. This event recognizes young athletes that participate in Parks and Recreation sports leagues. Tickets are available at www.cityofcape.org/sportsbanquet.              

    Impactful Projects

• The Youth Sports Complex project continues progressing. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2026.                             
• Construction on the Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail from Bloomfield Road to Shawnee Park is expected to begin spring 2026. The project will be partially funded by a grant through the Missouri Department of Transportation for $481,000.   Parks Maintenance crews have nearly completed stabilization of sections of the creek bank along Cape LaCroix Creek that was needed prior to the start of construction of the trail.          
• Improvements to the Shawnee Park Sports Complex continue with new fencing being installed on fields 1-5, a complex wide PA system, bleacher shade structures and new bleachers. The project is partially funded by a grant through the Department of Economic Development for $264,289.  Improvements are scheduled to be complete spring 2206.        
• The Parks and Recreation foundation has received a $84,000 donation from the Cape Noon Optimist Club for improvements to the Skate Park in Arena Park. The improvements will include the addition of a half pipe structure and new sidewalks to connect the amenities in the park. The half pipe is scheduled to be installed February 2 (weather permitting). 
• The Cape County Rotary Club recently donated and installed a shelter overlooking the Mississippi River at Walker Park. The shelter is a great addition to the Park and will provide an excellent space for citizens to enjoy a beautiful view of the river. 

Development Services

• South Sprigg Street roadway improvements are anticipated to be completed in spring 2026, improving traffic flow and connectivity in the area.

• North Sprigg Street improvements are funded through the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF). The Lexington Avenue to Broadway TTF project includes new roadway construction, ADA-compliant intersections, and upgraded traffic signals.

• The Transportation Trust Fund 7 (TTF7) Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is anticipated to be issued in approximately two months. This will initiate the selection process for projects and services funded under TTF7 for the next five years.

Airport

• Construction on the new corporate hangar is ongoing, with  steel girders currently being erected.
• Operations is preparing for the FAA Part 139 Inspection scheduled for January 26 and 27
• Official announcement on the Pensacola Flights are expected to release next week. It is looking like the flights will be on Wednesdays and Saturdays with AM departure times.

 Airline

• 24 flights: 2 Delays and 0 Cancellations (CX)
•  1/10: ORD outbound flt 3083 20min and 1/14: ORD outbound flt 3083 2hr 51min – began as a minor maintenance delay due to a plane swap, but turned into a lengthy delay for weather (snow) in Chicago.

What’s Going on in Cape

Sears Building Update

We are in discussions with a reputable developer about a potential retail redevelopment along Siemers Drive in the former Sears Building. These talks are ongoing, and we will share more details as they become available. We remain optimistic about the project’s prospects.

Broadway Theatre Redevelopment

The historic Broadway Theatre project is now entering Phase II, advancing additional commercial and residential components.

West Park Mall Redevelopment

Last Mile Liquidator and Ross Dress for Less have been confirmed as new incoming retailers at West Park Mall.  

Downtown Business Development

 A local developer plans to revitalize three downtown properties located on the 100 block of North Broadway, incorporating a mix of commercial and residential uses.

South Cape Neighborhood Retail Development

Dollar General Market is scheduled to open in 2026 at the intersection of Highway 74 and South Sprigg Street. In addition to retail, this location will offer expanded fresh grocery options, including produce, fresh meat, dairy, and a larger frozen food selection. The development is expected to enhance neighborhood retail and food access following the closure of Save-A-Lot.

Save a Lot Building

Executive Director Bob Janota, has partnered with Humble Path and Catholic Charities to renovate the old Save A Lot and Freds buildings. He has been meeting with city staff regarding the Cape Community Culinary and Food Ministry Center  which will transform the  36,000-square-foot building in downtown Cape Girardeau into a regional hub for culinary training, hunger relief, and faith-based community service . Core Components of the Cape Community Culinary and Food Ministry Center include a culinary training school, community kitchen and faith based food ministry as well as nutrition and health collaboration to promote healthy eating, recovery nutrition and wellness education.

Developer Engagement and Collaboration

The City hosts a quarterly Developer Roundtable that brings together City staff, developers, engineers, business owners, construction professionals, and other key stakeholders to foster open communication between the public and private sectors and improve coordination on development projects. The roundtable provides a structured forum for collaboration, information sharing, and discussion of development processes, challenges, and priorities.

Route K Corridor Project:

Includes roadway widening, new turn lanes, and a roundabout. Project completion is anticipated in fall 2026.

Infrastructure and Transportation Improvements

TTF7 – RFQ will be going out in approximately 2 months – which will began the process for the next 5 years of TTF7
