Public Works

  • Streets crew working on alley ways, improving intersections and dead ends of snow.
  • Stormwater crew is preparing pump stations, making necessary adjustments, and conducting staff training on pump station operations.
  • 2” Water crew working on Franklin and Luce Street 2” line replacements.
  • Fleet crew making needed repairs to snow equipment after the snow event. 

Fire Department

  • 113 total Incidents-4 structure fires, 2 hazardous situations, 52 medical assists, 25 public service, 1 vehicle extrication, 15 Aviation Standbys, 14 Non-Emergency
  • All crews participated in Ice Rescue Training
  • EMS Refresher completed for all crews

  • Planning meetings to support the Special Olympics-Polar Plunge

Parks

February 2-6

Upcoming Programs and Events:

  • The Arena Building will host the SEMO Gun Show Friday February 6, Saturday February 7 and Sunday February 8.
  • The Sportsplex will host the Level 12 Volleyball Tournament Saturday February 7 and Sunday February 8.
  • The Annual Super Kids Race Day will be held at the SEMO Recreation Center Sunday February 8 beginning at 1 pm.    

    Impactful Projects

  • The improvements to the Cape Noon Optimist Club Wheel Park have been completed.  The improvements included installation of a Half-pipe.  The project was made possible by the Cape Noon Optimist Club and the Parks and Recreation Foundation. 
  • The Scoreboards have arrived for the Youth Complex Project.  They will be installed the week of February 9.  Parks Maintenance Staff will begin installing the Bleacher Canopies on the ten fields at Shawnee Park Sports Complex. 
  • The Arena Park Baseball fields have been repurposed with additional infield dirt that was transferred from the Youth Complex project site.

  • TTF Project
  • Lexington to Broadway – New roadway, new ADA intersections and signal lights.
  • The final design will be completed within two weeks and will then be released for bidding

2025 Concrete street repair

  • Currently working on repairs
  • Themis Street (Silver springs to Mt Auburn) – complete
  • Minnesota ( Southern Expressway to Rust) – under construction 
  • Jan Drive complete

2025 Asphalt repair

  • All 2025 asphalt repair is complete (Bloomfield, Good Hope and Spring)

  • FAA part 139 inspection took place on 2/3 and 2/4.
  • Our application to become a member of the CAA (Corporate Aircraft Association) has been finalized and will be available for members to cast their votes starting on 2/1/2026. Being a member of the CAA would bring in more corporate/jet traffic to Cape Aviation (FBO) for fuel and other offered services.

What’s Going on in Cape

Casino Update

The first month of retail sports betting in Cape Girardeau produced favorable results for the City.   The local retail sportsbook at Century Casino Cape Girardeau, the only physical sportsbook located outside of the St. Louis and Kansas City markets, ranked as the second busiest retail sportsbook in Missouri during its inaugural month of operation.  This strong customer activity contributed to a slight increase in admission fees over the prior year.
