During Christmas week Thursday’s routes will run Wednesday the 24th.   City offices and the Transfer Station will be closed Wednesday but routes will run. The week of New Years Day, Thursday routes will run on Wednesday December 31st. Between Dec. 26 and Jan. 9th, Cape Public Works will pick up a reasonable amount of extra trash. Just sit your bagged extra trash next to your cart on trash day (not on top of it).

The City website will look different by the end of this month, with additional improvements coming online through Spring 2026. One of the biggest improvements will be faster load times and an enhanced search function, which should help guests quickly locate information, forms, and contacts. The site will remain organized by both service and department, so users can also browse in the way that works best for them.

If your home or personal property sustained damage in the March 30–April 8 storms, you can apply for FEMA assistance. Designated counties include Cape Girardeau, and Bollinger, Butler, Carter, Cooper, Dunklin, Howell, Iron, Mississippi, New Madrid, Oregon, Ozark, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, Vernon, Washington and Wayne.

We are seeing a lot of upgrades around the city, which will create a safer community with more opportunity for everyone. Residents young and old can thrive here, whether you want to continue your education, get training in a trade, develop and grow a business, or engage in public service. The focus of the City of Cape is to serve our residents by providing a solid infrastructure, a safe community, and a healthy economy to engage in. We are seeing big progress right now, with even bigger potential on the horizon. It is truly an exciting time to live in Cape Girardeau! We are randomly selecting homes to verify water line material city-wide. We removed the last of any known lead water mains in the public system a long time ago and we’re working now to verify and expand our records on the service lines connecting homes to water mains. We want you to know if your private water lines pose any health concerns.
