About Cape’s Streets
The City of Cape maintains more than 230 miles of street and 22 miles of alleyways, which is roughly the same distance as a drive to St Louis and back. Some roadway in Cape Girardeau is privately owned or maintained by other agencies (such as Kingshighway). Street maintenance efforts are coordinated by both our Public Works and Community Development departments using funding from the General Fund, Capital Improvement Sales Tax, other sources when available, but mostly the Transportation Trust Fund sales tax.
The following is a list of our projects that are in progress, coming soon, or recently complete.

Everyday, short-term rapid repairs, such as a pothole fill, are not listed in addition to periodic concrete repairs by staff (General Fund supported).

- Construction to begin late 2026.

- Veterans Memorial Dr Phase 6 – Hopper to Percy
- The task order being executed by the City will include a topographic survey and field work needed to complete acquisitions and the final project design (not final construction).

- Mount Auburn Road from Hopper Road to Independence Street
- (New pavement, new curb and gutter, sidewalk repair)
- Perryville Road from Cape Rock Drive to Perry Avenue
- (Pavement repair, addition of new sidewalk on east side)
- South Sprigg Street from William Street to Route 74
- (New pavement, new curb and gutter, sidewalk repair)
Recently Completed
S. Sprigg Street – Shawnee to Southern Expressway
- New roadway, water main, and sewer repair.
- Improvements to the Route 74 /Minnesota Ave Intersection (TTF6)
- The City and MoDOT coordinated on this cost-share on this project that connected Minnesota Ave. to Route 74 near Jefferson School (pool and park).
- West End Boulevard from Rose to Bertling (TTF)
- Full reconstruction, New Curb and Gutter, Drainage Improvements, and Sidewalks, Streetlights
- Expanded stormwater and a replacement sewer system was included in the project.
- Sprigg Street from William to Broadway
- Street Surface Replacement, Sidewalks, Right-Turn Lane at William/Sprigg
- College Street
- New street from South West End Blvd. to Minnesota Ave. complete with sidewalks.
- Minnesota at Southern Expressway
POSTPONED INDEFINITELY
- Independence Street from Gordonville/East Rodney to Clark
- Under Review — Traffic Study to Address Congestion, Implement Recommendations from Study

Project History
Street and Lane Closures
Utility companies, contractors, government agencies, and other private entities close streets for various repairs and projects. Thank you for being mindful of the workers on site. Known and substantial closure information is emailed to transport, public safety, and local media in addition to contractor notification to the affected residents and businesses.
