About Managed Deer Hunt
The City of Cape Girardeau’s managed deer hunt is one of over 100 similar programs statewide. Managed deer hunts support healthy wildlife by preventing overpopulation, starvation, and reducing the spread of diseases. Population control reduces the chances for deer-vehicle collisions, but does not eliminate all deer. There is a mandatory meeting for the managed deer hunt on October 4th, 2025 at 10:00 am at the Osage Center.
Managed Deer Hunt – Fall 2025
- Hunting limited to only individuals who obtain deer tags from the State of Missouri lottery system and attend a Cape-specific safety and orientation meeting.
- Only archery devices will be allowed. NO FIREARMS may be used.
- 80 selected hunters will be required to have Hunter Education or Bow Hunter Education certification and be 18 or older.
- Controlled harvest of a maximum of 240 deer, each hunter eligible to get three deer tags.
- Hunting is scheduled for five periods: Period 1: 10-18 to 10-24, Period 2: 11-01 to 11-07, Period 3: 11-15 to 11-21, Period 4: 11-29 to 12-05, Period 5: 12-13 to 12-19.
- Hunting areas will be limited to a few natural areas as mapped below.
- Hunting must take place in an elevated stand not less than ten feet in height to ensure projectiles are on a proper downward path to avoid ricochet and travel beyond the intended target.
- Hunting is strictly prohibited in City limits except for the managed hunt or private property hunt.
