About the Transportation Trust Fund
The Harry Rediger Transportation Trust Fund Committee is an ad hoc subcommittee that initiates a review of transportation needs to make recommendations to the City Council for Transportation Trust Fund projects. To view a list of recent, current, and upcoming repairs from all funding sources, visit cityofcape.org/streets.
The Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) sales tax is the main funding source for road repair, major street construction and renovation, and related projects. Recent projects include Lexington Avenue, North West End, S. Sprigg Street, Perryville Road, and Cape Rock Drive (see more at cityofcape.org/streets).
TTF projects are funded on a “pay-as-you-go” basis so that no money is borrowed to fund the projects. This 0.5% sales tax (half-cent per dollar spent) spreads the cost of improvement projects to everyone who uses the streets instead of just Cape Girardeau property owners.
Voters decided April 8, 2025 to renew the Transportation Trust Fund Sales Tax, a 1/2 of one percent sales tax that has been renewed every five years since 1995 to improve the city’s street network.
Public Process
The citizen advisory group, the Harry Rediger Transportation Trust Fund Committee, hosted several open house events and surveys while working with staff to thoroughly review repair needs and citizen input. They ultimately recommend specific projects and a general maintenance budget that the City Council adopts and proposes to the voters.
Every five years the voters decide whether to extend the ½ of one percent sales tax that has been renewed every five years since 1995 to improve the city’s street network.
