About the Board of Appeals

The Board of Appeals hears and decides on appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the building official relative to the application and interpretation of the locally adopted building codes. The City of Cape Girardeau currently adheres to the 2015 International Building Codes, and the 2014 National Electrical Code.

Members must be residents of the City. However, if no qualified city residents apply, applicants residing within Cape Girardeau County will be considered. Seven citizen advisers plus two alternates serve five-year terms on the Board and are appointed by the City Council. Of the seven members, no more than two are from each of the following professions:

(1) Registered design professional that is a registered architect; or a builder or superintendent of building construction with at least 10 years of experience, 5 of which shall have been in responsible charge of work;

(2) Registered design professional with structural engineering or architectural experience;

(3) Registered design professional with mechanical or plumbing engineering experience; or a mechanical or plumbing contractor with 10 years of experience, 5 of which shall have been in responsible charge of work;

(4) Registered design professional with electrical engineering experience; or an electrical contractor with at least 10 years of experience, 5 of which shall have been in responsible charge of work;

(5) Registered design professional with fire protection engineering experience; or a fire protection contractor with at least 10 years of experience, 5 of which shall have been in responsible charge of work.

Meeting Schedule

Meetings are held the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers unless no items are on the agenda.
