Residential service Monday through Friday with routes beginning at 6:00 a.m. According to City Ordinance, there is a 2 can/bag limit. Each container can hold up to 35 gallons and weigh up to 75 pounds. The City provides service to over 10,000 households weekly. If you have more than two cans/bags, extra refuse tags can be purchased at Schnucks, Wal-Mart, Food Giant, City Hall, and Public Works (5 for $5.00). Just stick these tags on your extra bags/cans and we will pick them up with the rest of your solid waste.
Four trucks pick up over 256,000 pounds of solid waste per week.

Residential 6 cubic yard container (dumpster) service can be scheduled by appointment. These are scheduled on a first come/first serve basis so plan ahead. There is a $42 charge for this service.
Wednesday Special Pickups can be scheduled by appointment. This service is provided for large bulky items including garage and basement debris. The charge for this service is dependent on the type of items you have. Call for appointment and fee.

Yard Waste Program
| | City Compost Bags can be purchased at Schnucks, Food Giant, City Hall, and Public Works (5 for $6.25). After purchasing your City yard waste bags, call Public Works to schedule a Wednesday pickup of them. You can also take your compost items (leaves and twigs with 1/4" diameter or smaller) to the Recycling Center - FREE. The compost is "aged" and made available to the public in the southeast corner of Arena Park (where the animals are during the Fair) on a first come first serve basis. Transfer Station
The City of Cape Girardeau Transfer Station is located in the 2500 block of South Sprigg Street . They are open weekdays 7:00 AM until 3:45 PM and are closed on weekends and City holidays. The current tonnage rate at the Transfer Station is $40.50 ton with a minimum charge of $1.00. This will increase to $43.00 ton as of 7/1/08. The appliance charge is $7.50 for each appliance and will remain the same after 7/1/08. The minimum charge will also remain at $1. NOTE: The Transfer Station will be closed on Friday June 13th at 1:00 pm for repairs to the tipping floor. We will resume normal hours on Monday, June 16th.
Recycling
Recyclables can either be set out for curbside collection or taken to the City Recycling Center Drop-Off Facility at 2007 Southern Expressway, on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. From the first Saturday in April through the second Saturday in October, Recycling Center hours are extended to be open on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. The Recycling Center is closed on City holidays. Email or call the Public Works Department for more information at (573) 334-9151.
Recyclables should be at the curb at 6:00 AM on your recycling day and each type item should be packaged separately.
Three recycling trucks collect over 3,000,000 pounds of material annually.
An average of 134 vehicles per day come through the Recycling Drop-Off Center.

Below are the different categories of recyclables to help you understand how to bundle different items. The recycling brochure is also available on-line.
Junk mail/Residential mixed paper should be kept separate from newspaper/magazines. Envelopes (window envelopes also acceptable), stationery, copy paper (all colors) computer paper (including greenbar) notebook paper and typing paper are accepted. Please remove staples and place Junk mail/Mixed paper into a plastic or paper bag and place in a box or recycling container.
Note: Items should be protected from wet weather by placing in a plastic bag.
Important!! Please do not mix junk mail/mixed paper with newspaper/magazines or grayboard/chipboard.
Corrugated Cardboard and Grayboard/Chipboard Includes cereal boxes, soda cases and cartons, shoe boxes etc.. No pizza boxes or egg cartons can be accepted. Corrugated cardboard and grayboard/chipboard should be free of wood, staples and food stains. Please flatten boxes and pack into a larger box, recycling container, or bundle with string.
Newspaper/Magazines & Catalogs Just place Newspaper/Magazines and Catalogs into a plastic or paper bag or bundle with string and place in a recycling container.
Note: In wet weather items, should be protected from rain by placing in a plastic bag.
Glass All colors of glass bottles can be recycled. It is not necessary to separate glass by color at the curb, but glass should be placed in an appropriate container or weatherproof bag during wet weather. No broken glass, window panes, auto glass, household china or glassware can be accepted. Please remove and discard lids, metal rings and caps and rinse items clean. Then place in a plastic/paper bag and put in a box or recycling container. Labels do not need to be removed.
Plastic Just remove and discard lids and caps, rinse containers and place in paper or plastic bag then place bag in a box or recycling container. Clean plastic containers, plastic shopping bags and newspaper wrappers are accepted. Examples of plastic we can not accept include egg cartons and tape cases. It is not necessary to remove labels.
Aluminum and Steel/Tin Cans can be packaged together for collection. (No aerosol cans). Cans should be rinsed to remove excess food. Then place in a plastic/paper bag and put in a box or recycling container. Lids and labels do not need to be removed.
