Safe Communities

The goal of the Cape Girardeau Safe Communities Program is to provide injury prevention strategies, primarily in the areas of traffic safety to the citizens of Cape Girardeau County.

The Safe Communities initiative is working to expand partnerships in the community to access local injury data. Through this information areas of concern are determined and new effective strategies for injury prevention are developed. The program has two full-time Coordinators and a 19 member Advisory Committee.

Team Spirit Leadership Training Conference

Team Spirit is a program designed to empower youth to take an active role in promoting safe driving habits, preventing alcohol and other drug use and the impaired driving that accompanies such use. Through their involvement in this program, Team Spirit members strengthen their individual determination and ability to remain alcohol and drug free. By working together they become an effective team creating positive changes within their schools and communities. The goal of the Team Spirit Leadership Training Conference is to provide participants with motivation, leadership skills, and information. Each school team will then have an opportunity to develop their own team’s individual action plan to address traffic crashes in their school and community.

Approximately 100 students and 20 advisors representing 8 high schools are selected to attend the four-day conference.  Additionally, 20 high school and college students serve as staff facilitators for these high school teams. Sample workshops are:

  • Prevention through Motivation
  • DWI – Reality Check
  • Seat Belts - Why Buckle Up?
  • Effective Communication
  • Team Building
  • Victim Impact Panel

Mothers Against Drunk Driving

The Cape Girardeau County MADD Community Action Team meets the third Thursday of each month.  An average of 15 members and advocates attend the meeting.

During the month of December MADD sponsors the annual Red Ribbon Campaign distributing more than 20,000 red ribbons through out the county and region as a reminder to all motorists not to drink and drive.  They also have a Christmas Light Display at the Cape County Parks Festival Lights Display.  MADD is also involved in various Safe Communities injury prevention programs.

MADD Victim Impact Panel

The MADD DWI Victim Impact Panel is held on the second Thursday of each month.  There is an average of 30 DWI offenders each session who are sentenced to attend the impact panel by the State and Municipal Courts in Cape Girardeau County. MADD members who have lost family members in drunk driving crashes volunteer monthly to speak.

MADD Candlelight Vigil

Each year during the month of December a Candlelight Vigil is held in memory of victims of drunk driving crashes.  The event is held at the Cape Girardeau Police Department the first Sunday in December.  Speakers are provided from both law enforcement and the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. After the speakers have completed their comments, family members place ornaments with the name of the victim on the Christmas tree in the lobby of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.  Following the ceremony, a reception and law enforcement recognition is held at the department for those in attendance as a thank you for all that they do throughout the year to help in the fight against drinking and driving.

Child Passenger Safety Programs

·         Child Passenger Safety Technician Certification Courses

Courses are held on a regular basis to certify technicians throughout the region.  The Safe Communities Coordinators serve as instructors for this 32-hour course.

·          A Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station

A fitting station is located at the Cape Girardeau Police Department.  Coordinators check child safety seats for the public by appointment and provide seats to those in financial need.

Drinking and Driving DOCU- DRAMA

The Drinking and Driving Docu-Drama is a mock alcohol-related traffic crash which depicts the realities and consequences of drinking involved motor vehicle crash.  The Docu-Drama utilizes all facets of the emergency response community which respond to the "mock" or "staged" crash.  In addition to the staged program, students are given the opportunity to discuss the program in follow-up session.  The purpose of the Docu-Drama is to give young people a close-up look at the ugly truth that goes along with most DWI crashes.

The Docu-Drama is an educational program consisting of two components:  (1) a mock vehicle crash and (2) a follow-up session in the classroom.  The program is staged at high schools and universities.  Students from the school play the parts of the injured and fatal victims of the crash.  Police, fire, ambulance and other emergency responders are summoned to the mock crash as the scene is played out, they perform their duties as they would in real life situation.

DWI Docu-Dramas are held at high schools throughout Southeast Missouri annually.  They are often sponsored by the schools Team Spirit or SADD organization.  The Safe Communities provides assistance with coordination of the projects when requested.
