FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Over the years, the Cape Girardeau Police Department has received many calls from community members with questions about police procedures, what to do about certain types of crime in their neighborhood, and other general questions.  We have included answers to some of the most frequently asked questions on this page.

I am interested in becoming an employee of the Police Department.   What does your hiring process consist of?

The Department only accepts applications when preparing to conduct a hiring process. However, we keep mailing lists for the various positions for those who are interested in employment with the Cape Girardeau Police Department. If you are not on our mailing list, simply call, fax, email or write to us with your name, address, phone number and the position(s) that you are interested in.

How do I obtain a copy of a Cape Girardeau police report?

Requests for copies of reports may be made in person or by mail (faxed requests are not accepted).

There is a charge of 10¢ per page plus research time for each report requested. Any request that is difficult to fulfill (retrieval from archives, etc.) will cost more depending on time spent by staff. This fee may be paid when you pick up the report. If you would rather have the report mailed or faxed to you, we will notify you of the cost and you can send payment. Make checks payable to the Cape Girardeau Police Department. We will mail or fax the report after receiving payment.

There is a three-business-day processing period that begins after the request has been received by the Records Unit. Special requests may take longer to complete. Please provide as much of the following information as possible:

  • Case number (case numbers are not the same as ticket numbers)
  • Date and time of occurrence
  • Location of occurrence (exact street address or intersection)
  • Type of occurrence (traffic accident, burglary, vandalism, etc.)
  • Full names of parties involved (names of drivers and/or victims)

Certain criteria must be met in order to obtain an Ex Parte Order of Protection. First, the person wanting the order (Petitioner) and the person being served (Respondent) must be at least 18 years of age. Second, both Petitioner and Respondent must have a physical address. Third, the order can be filed in 1) the county of residence of either party, 2) the county of the abuse, or 3) the county of the respondent’s place of employment.

If the criteria are met, the petitioner must go to the Circuit Court, Division IV to apply for the protection order. Division IV is located at 44 N. Lorimier Street, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, telephone number 573-335-1221.

We will be leaving on vacation for a week.  Does the department provide increased patrol around our residence while we’re out-of-town?

For citizens within the City Limits of Cape Girardeau, the department offers vacation checks to our citizens who will be out of town for an extended time.  A Vacation Request Form must be completed and signed before leaving on vacation.  Your address, along with the dates you plan on being out of town will be provided to officers and they will make every effort to keep an eye on your residence while you’re away.

Can I request extra patrol in my neighborhood?

If you are concerned about possible illegal activity occurring in your neighborhood and you would like extra patrol in that area, you can call the police department to request extra patrol.  Requests for extra patrols are added to a list and distributed directly to our officers to alert them of your concerns.

Please call the Cape Girardeau Police Department at (573) 335-6621, Extension 1042 to request extra patrol.
