The City of Cape Girardeau is located on the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Memphis. It has a population of about 36,000 and is a regional medical and retail center and home to Southeast Missouri State University. The City is governed by a Council-Manager form of government. The Chief of Police is appointed by the City Manager.

 

The Cape Girardeau Police Department consists of 77 commissioned full-time officers, 17 full-time civilians, and volunteers including a Police Reserve Unit. The Department operates on a $5.6 million budget. Commissioned supervisory positions include 12 Corporals, 7 Sergeants, 4 Lieutenants, 1 Captain and an Assistant Chief of Police.  

 

THE HIRING PROCESS

 

The Department only accepts applications when preparing to conduct a hiring process. However, we keep mailing lists for the various positions for those who are interested in employment with the Cape Girardeau Police Department. The minimum requirements for all employees are a High School Diploma or GED, driver’s license and no felony convictions. In addition, by the date of employment, Police Officers must be 21 years old and a resident of the State of Missouri. There is NO local residency requirement. Police Officer applicants do NOT need to be POST certified to apply.

 

All applicants must complete a written exam, interview, background investigation and drug screen. In addition, Police Officer applicants must complete medical and psychological evaluations and pass a physical fitness test consisting of:

 

1.      ½ mile run in a time of 4:30;

2.      push a car 30 feet;

3.      pull a simulated body 60 feet;

4.      Climb a 6-foot fence or wall.

In addition to the above base pay amounts, there are opportunities for overtime pay.

 

BENEFITS

 

In addition to the benefits listed on the City’s Benefits Summary, the Department provides an assigned vehicle to officers, ALL uniforms and equipment and has a tuition reimbursement program that applies to courses at an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school for courses related to the employee’s current position.
