Fort D (Fort Street and Locust Street) Fort D is a Civil War Historic Site as the only remaining fort and earthworks of the four originally built in Cape Girardeau. The site was designed by John Wesley Powell and the earthwork was constructed in 1861. The site also contains a limestone building that was constructed in 1937 as a federal WPA project.
