The purpose of the Planning and Zoning Commission is to promote, facilitate, and encourage enforcement of the laws of the State of Missouri and the Code of Ordinances of the City of Cape Girardeau with respect to proper municipal planning and zoning.  The duties of the Planning and Zoning Commission include the development and adoption of a city plan for the physical development of the city.  The Commission also makes recommendations to the City Council regarding zoning changes, special use permits, subdivision plats, and other developmental policy issues involving the Planning Services Division of the Development Services Department.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Council Chambers at City Hall.  The Commission consists of nine members appointed by the City Council for a term of four years.  Council policy limits members to three consecutive full terms.  Officers are elected for a two-year term.  The Chairman presides at all meetings, appoints committees, and performs such other duties as may be ordered by the Commission.
