The City Council is the elected governing body for the City of Cape Girardeau. The City Council consists of the Mayor and six City Council Members . The Mayor is directly elected at-large (city-wide) for a four-year term and the City Council Members are elected from six wards for staggered four-year terms. Cape Girardeau is a "home rule" city with the Council-Manager form of government .

City Council meetings are held on the first and third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.  The Council also meets at 5:00 p.m. for a Study Session prior to the each meeting.
