Born on the Mississippi River more than 200 years ago, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, has evolved from a tiny trading post to a frontier settlement governed by a French-Canadian commandant to a thriving, historically and culturally-rich community of 37,000 residents on the world’s only inland cape.

Cape Girardeau's City Government operates through its Mayor, city Council Members elected from wards, and an appointed City Manager. The council and mayor establish policy and law, and the City Manager handles day-to-day management tasks.

The Administrative Services Department encompasses a large part of Cape Girardeau's daily operations. Activities and subheadings of this department include the City Manager, City Attorney, Human Resources, Accounting, Management Information Systems, Municipal Court, Public Information, Airport, Convention and Visitors Bureau and more.

The Development Services Department has three divisions: engineering, inspection and planning services. Together these branches work to coordinate City activites pertaining to community and economic development.

City communications are coordinated by Public Information Office staff members. As a part of the City Manager's team, the Public Information Coordinator works closely with city employees. Monthly publications include the Cape Chronicle and Department Dittos newsletters. This office also coordinates bulletins and video scheduling for the Public Access Channel 5 - Cape Update.

Cape Girardeau's Public Works Department provides a variety of community services to help make life better for citizens. Public Works oversees many daily tasks including waste and recycling collection, storm water and sewer maintenance, street maintenance and repair, vehicle and equipment maintenance, water treatment and distribution. The Customer Service Department manages applications for water, sewer, trash and recycling services, utilities billing, and business and liquor licensing.

Cape Girardeau's proximity to the Mississippi River, and it's location nearly halfway between St. Louis and Memphis on Interstate 55, creates a confluence of transportation across our region. The Cape Girardeau Regional Airport offers a wide range of services and aviation types for both business and pleasure. Bus and taxi services are available through the Cape County Transit Authority, and the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority services our area's portion of the Mississippi River.
