The process to become a Police Officer is a lengthy one. This page will give you more information about the job of a Police Officer and the requirements to complete the application process.
Policing is among the most rewarding careers you can pursue. Police officers are pillars of the community, role models, life-savers, and relentless in the pursuit of justice. The Cape Girardeau Police Department has a storied history and our officers are highly trained.
The Department only accepts applications when preparing to conduct a hiring process. We keep mailing lists for various positions for those who are interested in employment with our Department. | Eligibility Requirements for Police Officers: (minimum) |

| 21 years of age |
|
|
| Resident of Missouri (no local residency requirement) |
|
|
| No felony convictions |
|
|
| Valid driver's license |
|
|
| High school diploma/GED |
|
|
| Applicants DO NOT need to be POST certified to apply |

All Police Officer applicants must complete a written examination. Applicants who pass the written examination will be required to pass a physical fitness test consisting of:

| Physical Fitness Test: |
|
|
| 1/2 mile run in a time of 4:30 |
|
|
| Push a car 30 feet |
|
|
| Pull a simulated body 60 feet |
|
|
| Climb a 6-foot wall |
|
|
| |

Upon successful completion of the physical fitness test, applicants will be invited for an interview. The chosen applicant will be required to undergo an extensive background investigation, drug screen, and physical and psychological evaluations.

CIVILIAN EMPLOYMENT |
|
|
|
The Cape Girardeau Police Department offers several career opportunities for civilians. These include the position of records clerk, parking control officer, nuisance abatement officer, jailer, and secreterial positions. As a civilian employee of the Cape Girardeau Police Department you will be eligible to participate in a variety of benefits offered by the City.
Civilian employees receive on-the-job training from supervisors and seasoned, veteran employees. Civilian employees may also receive periodic training relative to their specific job duties.
The civilian employment application process consists of:

- Typing Test (if applicable)
