August 23, 2010 1930 hours: E1, E3, E2, R4, L1, BC1 and C2 responded to a Box Alarm in the 1100 block of Merriwether Street for a reported house fire. Upon arrival, BC1 reported a 1-1/2 story frame residence with smoke showing from the upper floor. He reported that all occupants were said to be out of the structure and declared an offensive mode of operations. While crews were stretching initial attack lines and preparing for vertical ventilation, the second floor flashed over, and fire erupted from the upper floor windows on all sides of the 1200 sq. ft. structure. Crews made an aggressive interior attack, quickly knocking down and controlling the fire, while L1’s operator vented the roof. The situation was contained within fifteen minutes.

June 16, 2010 1644 hours: R4, E2, E3, E1, L1, BC3, C1 and C2 responded to a Box Alarm in the 2000 block of Prairie Lane for a reported building fire. A large plume of black smoke was visible from over a mile away. R4 reported on scene with a large two-story structure 50% involved. The involved structure housed a construction company, with offices on the first floor and storage on the second floor in the front half; and, the construction equipment storage and maintenance bays in the back half. The back half of the structure was completely involved in fire, with hot smoke pushing from the front eaves. The incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm bringing mutual aid companies to the scene. 2” and 1-3/4” handlines were advanced through the front doors and operated on both floors in the front half of the structure. Crews controlled fire that had extended into the attic area over the front half of the building. In the meantime, 2-1/2” handlines and master streams were utilized to protect exposed fuel tanks and begin knocking down the fire in the rear half of the structure. While fire streams were deployed on all four sides of the structure, the attack efforts were coordinated to ensure no two streams opposed one another at the same time. The fire was controlled in about 30 minutes. Due to high heat and humidity, a third alarm was struck to bring additional mutual aid companies to the scene to assist with extensive overhaul and salvage. Haz Mat booms and some dirt diking had to be used to control oils and fuel floating atop the water run-off. Many pieces of antique furniture and collectables were salvaged from the second floor storage area. Crews from Jackson, East County, Scott City, Fruitland, and Gordonville joined recalled off-duty firefighters to make up the extra alarms and back-fill the city’s stations. The fire was caused by welders in the shop area.
